More than two hundred years ago, the Assembly Rooms was created as a place for people to meet, talk, do business and be entertained. From royal banquets to Edinburgh Festival Fringe shows, and from ceilidhs to readings by Dickens, Scott and Thackeray, not only has this beautiful 18th century building survived the centuries, but its purpose continues to this day. Following a major redevelopment completed in 2012, this iconic Georgian venue has been transformed into spaces fit for contemporary use, but with their architectural significance preserved and enhanced. Restored to their former glory, our Ballroom, Music Hall, Drawing Rooms and Crush Hall are providing elegant backdrops for formal and informal occasions, day and night.
The Assembly Rooms is fully accessible to the Main First Floor Spaces - Music Hall, Ballroom, East and West Drawing Rooms. On entering the building via an Automatic Door, and a 2nd set of heavier doors (these are generally open) there is a manned reception desk to the left with receptionist more than happy to assist if required. Access into the building is flat. There are no steps to negotiate. To access the First Floor, there is a lift to the right of the foyer. The lift is large and spacious and has grab bars for assistance. The lift also features spoken messages indicating which floor the lift is on and whether the doors are opening or closing. There is signage within all areas directing guests. Directional signage is in Braille, located in the corridors, main foyer and lift. Within the building there are call buttons for assistance if required.
The Assembly Rooms has two accessible toilets on the First Floor of the building for guests attending events within the venue. They both have grab rails, cord alarms and lowered sinks. In addition we have PIR based lighting. There is also an accessible toilet within Jamie’s Italian Restaurant on the Ground Floor for restaurant guests.
