Birkenhead Park is a historic Grade I listed landscape in Birkenhead that served as the inspiration for Central Park in New York. Visitors can explore vast open meadows, natural woodland, and picturesque lakes, or visit the onsite gallery and visitor centre. The park is a popular spot for family outings and bird watching, with an adventure playground and various sports facilities including tennis courts and bowling greens.

Friendliest squirrels!

I had such a wonderful time in this park! It’s a large park with some beautiful sights, including a Roman bathhouse and an ornate bridge. My highlight was when some squirrels came up and said hello to me! I imagine they were assessing whether I had any food to give them but they were really inquisitive and one even came and touched my wheelchair and even looked like she was ready to jump onto my lap! The whole park was really beautiful and peaceful. I found all the paths really easy to navigate in my wheelchair as they were all quite wide and smooth. There was the odd tree root that caused a bit of a bump in the pathway but for the most part it was very smooth. One thing I did notice is that I didn’t see many benches or seating options. I travelled a fair distance between the seating options I did see and I would have struggled if I had visited during my walking stick/ambulatory wheelchair days. There was also a café and accessible toilets at the Visitor Centre including a Changing Places toilet.
