Disabled Traveller at CHAWTON the home of Jane Austin

A small village is recorded in the doomsday book of 1086, which had just 19 residents, but also recorded were 6 slaves. CHAWTON never really grew , any lively hood concentrated on sheep farming.
A small village where Jane Austin lived for a short while, spending the last six years of her life here, in a 17th century house known as CHAWTON cottage, now a grade 1
small writers museum since 1963, and it is here that she wrote Mansfield Park, Emma, and Persuasion. It was opened to the public in July 1949, visited by around 40,000 people each year. It opens at 10.00.
On arriving into Chawton, just on a sharp bend there are a few cottages of note (photos 1; 2 and 3) and a public car park is available (photo 4). Just across the road you will find a small cafe (photos 5 and 6) which opened at 9.30 so handy for early morning coffee.
Opposite is the Writers museum (photos 7, 8 and 9) dedicated to the memory of Jane Austin, with a room made out as a dining room, with plagues on one wall depicting
various people of note. The museum opens at 10.00.
The Greyfriar inn has been the village pub since the time of the Spanish Armada, and offers traditional pub grub.
