Disabled Travellers Bicester trip part three Chesterton
A pleasant enough small village just two miles away from Bicester Village, and a nice place to see as driving through towards next points of call.
A charter of Eynsham Abbey from 1003 records the village as Cestertune, by the doomsday book of 1086 it is known as Cestretune and is still so named in 1220.
Derived from the old English word tun, meaning an enclosed place, and ceaster
meaning a Roman station.
There was a water mill here since Norman conquests, but another had been added, around 1279, we assume on Gaggle brook, both now gone.
An open field system was in use up until 1768.
The main road passes Bicester to the north (photo 1) showing you when you enter Chesterton, and the wall forms part of the boundary of Bignell House, which you enter via a long driveway, guarded by “The Gate House” (photo 2). The big house of Bignell is dated back to 1860’s, situated on Gaggle Brook, with formal landscaped gardens.
After entering the village, which is worth taking a look at to see the pale Cotswold stone work throughout the village, and when arriving at the “Green” stay straight ahead to your right, on the Witney A4095 sign, and you will pass cottages such as “The Thatched Cottage” on your right (photo 3)
Drive through to turn around at the “Y” junction at end of village, and drive back to the “Green” junction, and TURN RIGHT” by the bus stop (photo 4) then pass the catholic CE primary school (photo 5) first built in 1854 by Lady Jersey as the parish school, then in 1933 it was a junior school, but today the catholic school.
There are a few more lovely thatched cottages to see (photo 6) as you drive on towards the St Mary’s Church and its lych gare (photo 7).
The ancient church was rebuilt and consecrated in 1238 (photo 8) By 1552 St Mary’s had three bells, and these were in place by 1623. The clock was added in 1884.
The village has a public house, “ THE RED COW “ (photo 9 and 10) dated 1790 as can be seen on the placard above the front porch (photo 11).
