Overall Rating
Excellent
This hospital was clean, well staffed and had a lot of volunteers on the day I visited. I was particularly impressed with the Changing Places toilet on the ground floor, which was in addition to 6 more accessible toilets on site as well as the usual male and female toilets. The signage is clear and frequent and I was able to find the outpatient clinic I was looking for with ease. There are additional services at the hospital, such as a Carers Hub, restaurant, cafe + deli bar at the end of the foyer which is very popular with locals. These are open 7am-7pm and there are vending machines in same area for out of hours.
Disabled Access In and Around
Good
As a newish hospital, access is pretty good, however I did have one or two issues with pavements here and there ending without a dropped kerb
Accessible facilities: Single-level venue, Step-free entrance, Seating at regular intervals, Lift to all areas
Parking & Transport
Average
I travelled to this place by personal vehicle
Parking was my main complaint about this hospital. Parking is free, but I had to wait a long time for a blue badge parking spot for the WAV because there are roughly 20 Blue Badge parking spots for the entire hospital. There are as many EV charging points across the hospital grounds, and none of the are wheelchair accessible! The hospital can be reached from town via buses 111 or 500 from Dumfries centre. These run every half hour.
Accessible facilities: Dedicated on-site parking
Accessible Toilets
Excellent
There were no less than SEVEN accessible toilets that I could find on the hospital ground floor alone, and this was in addition to the regular male and female toilets. There was also a separate Changing Places toilet. Each accessible toilet s well sign posted and the door was not electric but was light enough to open easily, with a lever lock and a grab rail on the inside. The door to the toilets open outwards and do not need a RADAR key to access. The toilets have alternating left and right hand side transfer spaces with a fold down grabrail on the other side, a backrest and a horizontal grab rail on the other. Unfortunately the transfer space was almost always obstructed by a bin. The toilets have a push button flush which I found a bit hard to operate but the Red Cord was hanging all the way to the floor. The lowered sink with grabrails on both sides has a lever-style tap, paper towel dispenser, soap dispenser and mirror.
Facilities: Accessible toilet, Changing Places toilet with shower
Staff
Excellent
the staff were very helpful in helping me find the right outpatient clinic. They were also very receptive to my feedback about the Changing Places toilet.
Additional Information
The hospital is outside of town and a bit of an internet black hole! I had no phone reception or 5G connection until I left the site, and had missed several phone calls.
