Fort Nelson

Fort Nelson is most easily accessed by car, with disabled parking available. The shop and the vast majority of exhibits are fully wheelchair accessible either via lifts or ramps. Some of the doorways are a little narrow in places but still wide enough to fit through in a wheelchair. The ramp through the fort into the hillside is quite long and steep, and the lighting is quite dim. Impressively, even the ramparts can be accessed from a wheelchair up a smooth turf ramp. Several exhibits also offer tactile models for the visually impaired. An accessible toilet is available in the shop, and staff are super friendly. The cream tea is banging.

Fort Nelson is a restored Victorian fort, placed on the top of portsdown hill overlooking Portsmouth harbor. It gives an exciting incite to what cannons and fortifications where used to protect the south coast. With its secret underground tunnels, ammunition bunkers and 19 acres of ramparts and fortifications , you are able to discover what it is like to live in this Victorian garrison including the kitchen and hospital.
