Venue Description

George Best Belfast City Airport (BHD) is a regional airport which facilitates 19 airline routes to a number of destinations across the UK and Europe in partnership with blue-chip airline partners. The Airport is located only five minutes from Belfast city centre and serves approximately 2.6million passengers each year.

Accessibility

Assistance call points are located in the drop-off area in the short stay car park, at the assistance desk in the terminal and in the designated assistance area in departures. The airport is a fully accessible environment with ramps and lifts provided where required. Both inbound and outbound passengers are able to easily move through the Airport, with all doors wide enough for a wheelchair and luggage to pass through. The doors on the main entrance and exit are automatic, so no physical force is required to open them. The ground on the way to the front door is flat and a ramp is not required. There is a lift located after our security screening so passengers can easily move to the departures lounge, where there is an allocated seating area for passengers with reduced mobility. Another lift is located in the departures lounge for passengers to access the boarding gates. Toilets

All toilets on the premise are accessible without steps, in addition to having easy to move locks and taps. There are grab rails situated in the disabled bathrooms and these doors are wide enough for a wheelchair to enter. We have also added signage to the doors of all of our disabled toilets in line with a campaign being run by Crohns and Colitis UK to show that not all disabilities are visible.

Staff

Our PRM team are specially trained to deliver a service appropriate for the user with a wide range of support options available. In addition to their required training, both the PRM and Security Teams have received additional training in areas such as Autism Awareness, flying with a stoma bag, mental health, Dementia, and facilitating assistance dogs. We introduced our Hidden Disability Lanyards in 2018 to help make travelling as stress-free as possible, as well as becoming the first Airport to recognise the NOW Group's 'Just-a-minute (JAM) Cards'. We continue to work with local disability organisations throughout 2020 and commit to seeking relationships with other disability groups to ensure we're delivering the best service possible.
