Overview

We stayed for two nights at this Edinburgh hotel which is in the former Bank of Scotland branch building on St Andrew Square which I used to come to for business banking in the late 1980s and early 1990s. We had one of the two accessible rooms (the hotel only has 33 rooms in total) where the facilities were first rate, with all the hand rails you could ever need. The hotel has a few steps in places which I was able to negotiate, but there is also a wheelchair entrance at the side of the building. There are refuge call buttons in several places should anyone need assistance within the building. The Spence restaurant on the ground floor and the Lamplighters bar on the fifth floor both have disabled toilets within a short distance.

Transport & Parking

We came to Edinburgh by train and LNER staff me with a wheelchair and took me to the taxi rank on Market Street. Our taxi had an accessibility step which lowered on entry and exit.

Access

There are a few steps at the front of the hotel (as you might expect at a former prestigious bank building). There is a rail at the side and I was able to climb up to reception where there was seating for anyone with to check in.

Toilets

Plenty of grab rails in our accessible room toilet, but also in the public area disabled toilets.

Staff

Staff were always very helpful and considerate. Perhaps a slight tendency to fuss, but they also seemed to know when to leave patrons to themselves.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

As this was late 2023 there were no particular Covid precautions. We hope to visit again. It’s obviously not cheap, but we do recommend this hotel.
