Equally appealing to adults and families, The Isle of Wight Steam Railway operates a 5 mile line, plus an extensive visitor attraction at Havenstreet station. The sight of powerful majestic steam engines, the charm of quiet rural stations, and the friendliness of traditionally uniformed staff, will leave you with some enduring memories of a special day out. Trains run throughout the year - Daily from early-June to early October; on most days in late March, April and May; and on many days in October, November and December. For every visitor, we offer a unique and exciting day out, as you step back to a bygone era when steam power was the order of the day. Settle back in beautifully restored Victorian and Edwardian carriages and enjoy a unique view of some of the Island’s unspoilt countryside ... or hop off at one of our stations and just watch the trains go by! Our locomotives and carriages have all been painstakingly restored to pristine condition and are the hallmark of our delightful railway. Our oldest locomotive was built in 1876 and carriages date back to 1864!

Great service

Visited the Isle of Wight Steam Railway with my husband who uses a mobility scooter. All very accessible. We were able to ride on the train with husband able to remain in his scooter. Access via a ramp. All staff (volunteers) very helpful. Train Story Museum also fully accessible. Disabled toilet had slightly awkward access as corridor was slightly narrow to turn but was manageable. Lots of disabled parking on hard surface car park.

Disabled Access at Isle of Wight Steam Railway

Level step-free access is available to all the main facilities at Havenstreet station including the booking office, cafe, shop, museum and the Train Story Discovery Centre. The station platform is accessed via a short permanent ramp. Our carriages date from the Victorian and Edwardian era; most have traditional separate compartments. Our standard compartments have a door approximately 550mm wide and require a step up from the platform. We have a portable walking ramp available for any passengers with restricted mobility who require step-free access to the carriage. Wheelchairs and walking aids can be taken to the carriage door and then carried in the guards van for the duration of the journey. In addition each train has two wheelchair accessible compartments. These have been specially adapted to include double doors which can be reached by a portable ramp. Please book online then call or email us if you would like us to reserve a wheelchair compartment for you.

Several dedicated parking bays for disabled visitors in a free car park at Havenstreet station. From here there is level access to the booking office and all areas of the site.
