Great facilities, awkward sink

The Changing Places toilet at King’s Cross station is located in the same area as the other toilet facilities, including two accessible toilets. They are just after the Harry Potter shop. Signage in the station includes the Changing Places symbol to make it easier to locate. It doesn’t have a RADAR key lock and seems to have a lock that can only be opened by staff. There is a doorbell next to the Changing Places toilet door to ring for staff if there is no one there. When I have needed to use this in the past, there has been a member of staff there already who let me in and assisted with opening the door for me. It has an electric ceiling hoist and height-adjustable bench, a manually height-adjustable sink and a toilet with an automatic wash and dry bidet system. There are also shower facilities, a privacy screen and a colostomy shelf. All the equipment was working well when I tested it. I did find that the sink was quite awkward to lower as it really needed some weight above it in order to lower it.

The signage throughout the station includes the Changing Places symbol to make it easier to locate and it’s in the same are as all the other toilet facilities. The door opens outwards and has a standard door handle. The lock on the outside is controlled by station staff. If the door is locked when you need to use it, there is a doorbell on the left-hand side to call a member of staff. When I have used this, there is already a member of staff in the area to assist me.

There are a number of train operators available at this station. London North Eastern Railway (LNER), Govia Thameslink Railway, Hull Trains, Grand Central and Lumo all provide services to and from King’s Cross. This means that you are able to get services to Lincoln, York, Leeds, Bradford Forster, Harrogate, Edinburgh Waverley, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Letchworth Garden City, Cambridge, Ely, King’s Lynn, Hull, Beverley, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, Bradford Interchange, and Glasgow. These services will often call at even more stations along the way. Just next door is St Pancras International Station. This station has different train operators, including Southeastern, Thameslink, East Midlands Railway (EMR), and the Eurostar. Connected to the station is the Underground station called King’s Cross and St Pancras. From here you can get services on the Northern, Victoria, Metropolitan, Circle, and Hammersmith and City lines. These services all provide step-free access from the street level to train. This means that no boarding ramps are required for any lines at this station. These step-free routes are reliant on all the lifts working so it’s always worth checking the TfL website for any access updates. There are two bus stops that are located just outside the station, on Euston Road. These are called King’s Cross St Pancras (Stop D) and King’s Cross St Pancras (Stop E). From these stops you can get the buses 30, 46, 63, 73, 205, 214, N63, N73, and N205. Around the corner on York Way is the stop King’s Cross Station/York Way (Stop G) where the buses 17, 91, 259, 390, and N91 stop. There is also another stop on Pancras Road, the road between King’s Cross and St Pancras stations. This is called King’s Cross and St Pancras (Stop T) and the buses 46 and 214 stop here. There is a dedicated taxi rank just off of Pancras Road where black cabs stop and wait. There is a queueing system in operation here. This area is also where taxis will be able to drop passengers off. There are three disabled spaces on Pancras Road which are for disabled passengers that are being dropped off or picked up. There is a help point by these spaces where you can request assistance to come and meet you at the spaces and there is a meeting point inside the station where passengers can be picked up from. There is another drop-off point, also on Pancras Road. This is for dropping off only, and is not for parking. There is space for five vehicles here (according to the station website). There is a car park attached to the station, although the information for it online is slightly unclear and I didn’t see any signage for it within the station. The entrance is on Pancras Road, near the taxi rank and according to information online, there are 322 spaces, including 12 accessible parking spaces. It is a paid car park and is open from 5am until just after 1am each day.

Accessible Toilets

Good

The door opened outward and was quite large, but not too heavy. Inside, there is a small twist lock to lock the door from the inside. The Changing Places toilet is a large room with a height-adjustable bench with shower facilities, a ceiling hoist, a toilet with bidet system, a privacy screen, and a height-adjustable sink. There was information posted on the wall by each piece of equipment with information about weight limits and how to operate them. The ceiling hoist is stored directly on your left-hand side as you enter the toilet. This is its charging position and you will also find the information on the wall behind it. This was in good working order when I visited. The weight limit for the hoist was listed as 200kg. The height-adjustable bench was also on the left-hand side of the room, at the opposite end of the bench to the hoist was a shower attachment which was mounted on the wall. This bench was also in good working order and the weight limit was also listed as 200kg. At the back of the room, in the centre, was a privacy screen which could be pulled down alongside the bench to offer privacy to anyone using it. The toilet was on the right-hand side of the room and had a bidet system attached to it. It had an automatic wash and dry function which could be triggered via the remote control which was mounted on the wall behind the toilet. There was a height-adjustable grab rail on either side of the toilet. The only toilet roll available was a large roll that had been left on top of the back of the toilet. I found it quite difficult to reach around to grab it. The manual flush was a circular button on the back of the toilet. It was quite awkward to reach it from a wheelchair as it was just a bit too high to be within easy reach. There was signage behind the toilet that explained how to use the automatic cleaning functions and listed the maximum weight limit as 150kg. To the right of the toilet was a small shelf mounted on the wall. The height-adjustable sink was on the right-hand side of the toilet as you entered the bathroom. It was a manually adjustable sink, which I’ve not encountered before and actually found very difficult to adjust on my own. There was a lever on the right-hand side which you had to push downward; this then allowed you to push the sink lower, however, it was incredibly difficult to do so and I imagine would be easy if you are standing. A red emergency cord was hanging freely to the floor next to the toilet and it already had a Euan’s Guide Red Cord Card on it. There was also a large mirror which was mounted on the wall in between the hoist and the bench. Some coat hooks, at two different heights, were also by the door.

I find that there are often station staff already in the vicinity of the toilets who are able to assist with opening doors to the toilets. They are always really lovely.
