This royal pleasure palace was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. You can see the elaborate, restored fountain in action every Sunday in July and August. The high towers look down over the palace's grounds - the Peel - and Linlithgow Loch, an important refuge for wildlife. 1 Apr to 30 Sept: Daily, 9.30am to 5pm (last entry 4.15pm). 1 Oct to 31 Mar: Daily, 10am to 4pm (last entry 3.15pm). Mobility Access

Overall disappointed with lack of information before booking. There wasn’t really much to see if you couldn’t climb the stairs. Lots and lots of stairs! Also only one toilet on site so constant queues.

Photogenic palace

Beautiful surroundings and reasonable parking. However providing lifts and more toilets could make access much easier.

Nice loch trail, tricky access in the Palace

This is a fascinating Palace, but it is for the most part very inaccessible. Steep spiral stone staircases, dim passageways, ruined halls and dark cellars are the main characteristic of Linlithgow Palace. However, as other reviewers have said, the Peel walkways are very nice, and you can also easily enter the courtyard of the Palace where the beautiful water fountain is, and most of the visitor interpretation boards detailing the history of the site.

Disabled Access at Linlithgow Palace and Peel

Approach to site Approach directly from the car park. Visitor centre Entry is over a small (50mm) stone threshold and is level after that, but the surface is uneven. The visitor centre is on the level, while the shop is entered via a single step. Monument Ground floor The courtyard, the king’s fountain and the old entrance are all on the level, the floor being surfacedwith flagstones and some cobbles. The first floor is reached by one of four stone spiral staircases. Three have handrails. All have uneven treads and around 25 steps. The first floor includes the King’s Chambers, Great Hall, Chapel Royal, and a small museum showing finds from the palace and peel. There are many small level changes between rooms.

Parking spaces are available at the front of the palace. There are two accessible bays next to the entrance. The surface is stone cobbles. The furthest bay is 5m from the entrance to the palace.

The nearest adapted toilet is at The Vennel, off the High Street, about 350m from the site’s main entrance.
