Fab London history... And free!

Excellent

Really really cool place to visit... Won't lie - we had a couple of places lined up and chose this one as it was free. It is a fantastic museum with loads of interesting stuff for both adults and kids - I'd thought it was going to be a half hour jaunt but we ended spending a couple of hours there. Stuff for touching, watching, listening and doing. The more recent history sections at the end of the museum particularly interesting - always love to learn more about things that have happened in my lifetime.

Disabled Access In and Around

Excellent

There has obviously been a great deal of thought put into accessibility - things we saw in no particular order included: - Step free entrance into the shop - Decent sized lifts to all levels - Manual wheelchair and scooters - presumably to hire / borrow - but didn't check - Video with subtitles - Screens with headsets to listen - Areas where you could walk or wheel through (some of these had faux cobbles and low lighting to set the scene) - exhibits at table height which you were actively encouraged to pick up and handle - Banks of portable seats that you could take around with you - Braille formats of signage - exhibits that you could engage with such as living room 'streets' - decent sized lockers so you could leave any stuff - regularly placed signs with information about the museum generally and specifically any events that are on - seating at regular intervals - some on its own - some for engaging with exhibits or watching video Museum starts with oldest history first up on the top floor - and then works its way down to the present day. A lot contained in these walls. Add to this the WONDERFUL kids exhibits - check out the photos of the 'Yellow brick tunnel' and the 'magnetic find and place on map", the 'hamster wheel' and of course the 'wobbly bridge' you have one cool museum!! NB there was a seperate 'mobility lift' that when we visited was out of order - but this didn't matter for us - the 'standard' lift between floors was actually much better.

Got there by Tube, went back by DLR. Might even be some river options nearby??

Accessible Toilets

Good

Clean tidy and seemed like they were well looked after. Only when we were leaving that I saw that they also had a Changing Places toilet.

Staff

Excellent

There are staff that welcome you as soon as you come in the main doors - they directed us to a great "Family Desk" where they told us more about the museum and in particular what would be cool for kids. There were more of these family desks on different floors in the museum. There are collection boxes placed about the place - suggested but optional donation of £5 recommended. Very happy to do this as it was such a great couple of hours. Would definitely visit again.
