    About

Lothian Buses is the primary public transport operator in Edinburgh, providing comprehensive bus services across the city and surrounding Lothian regions. Passengers can travel efficiently to major landmarks, daily commutes, and coastal towns onboard a modern fleet of double and single decker buses. The service offers a convenient and affordable way to explore local sights, connect with regional transport hubs, or simply travel around town.

Vehicles across the network feature low floor entrances with kneeling functions and retractable ramps for step free access. Designated spaces are reserved onboard for wheelchair users, alongside priority seating for passengers with mobility requirements. Additional features include high visibility handrails and audio and visual next stop announcements to assist visually or hearing impaired travellers.

    Inaccessible for power wheelchair users

Lothian buses accessibility policy states that "Please be aware that, for the safety of all customers, front-mounted handcycle and power assist devices for manual wheelchairs can only be carried on our services if they have been detached and stored in a bag." And "Please be aware that we are unable to accommodate mobility scooters for travel on any of our buses unless they have been dismantled/folded and can be stored as luggage." For some one who needs for medical reasons to use a power assisted device for my wheelchair, I am not able to use the bus which I think is pretty poor

Edinburgh buses now accept mobility SCOOTERS!

Until recently, Edinburgh buses would not permit mobility scooters onboard. In my last visit, 09/08/2026, this changed - using my TravelScoot I was able to travel around the city with ease, using the buses. A GREAT IMPROVEMENT!

An easy way of getting around the city

Whilst staying in Edinburgh last week, we used a number of buses (22, 34 and 35) to transport us from Ocean terminal to various destinations. Perhaps we were fortunate that there was no other wheelchair user wanting to us a bus that we were on but the buses appeared to be fairly frequent anyway.
