Cinema Accessibility Review: Great Facilities, But a Serious Hidden Hazard in Screen 4
.
General Access & Facilities
• Parking & Entrance: Accessible parking (Remember to register your parking; it's free) is available on-site, and there is level access leading into the main building. However, the entrance doors are not automatic, which can be a significant obstacle if you are navigating them independently in a wheelchair.
• Accessible Toilets: There are accessible toilets located on both the ground floor and the 1st floor.
• Lifts: A lift provides smooth access to the 1st and 2nd floors where the cinema screens are located.
⚠️ Screen 4 Access: A Major Hazard for Ambulant Guests
If you are visiting Screen 4, please be aware that the design choices pose some serious safety risks, particularly for ambulatory guests or anyone with low vision.
• The Corridor: Screen 4 is accessed through a door leading into a corridor that has no emergency lighting. To make matters trickier, the floor surface ramps up and down unexpectedly with no warning signs or high-visibility markings, though wall handrails are at least provided.
• Seating & Wheelchair Spaces: Once inside the screen, you can continue to the left to walk up a further ramp where the designated wheelchair and carer spaces are located.
• The Step Hazard: There is a single step located near the seating rows. When exiting the screen, this step is immediately on your left.
• My Experience & Safety Warning: If you are ambulant, please be extremely cautious of that step on the left when exiting. While it features some standard floor lighting, the step is virtually invisible in the low-light conditions once the film is running or ending. Because of the poor visibility, I completely missed the fact that it was a step and unfortunately suffered a fall.
📝 Final Thoughts
While the venue has put effort into providing lifts, ramps, and accessible toilets, the lack of signage and poor lighting in Screen 4's exit route is a major safety oversight. If you are visiting, please take extra care when moving around the screen in the dark, and don't hesitate to ask a staff member for assistance if you feel unsure.
