    About

Join us as we journey from Ravenglass, the only coastal village in the Lake District National Park, across the estuary, through the hills, past seven request stops with a 1:40 gradient at times, en route to our final destination some seven miles up the line to Dalegarth for Boot Station. The journey itself was one of Wainwright’s favourites, crossing seven miles of spectacular scenery to the foot of England’s highest mountains, the Scafell Range (3,209ft) at their peak. With daily steam hauled services from March until October and special events throughout the year.

    Fantastic trip

We visited the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway in June 2024. There is disabled parking on site in Ravenglass and they do carers tickets for certain disabilities. My partner is in a manual wheelchair and they booked us into the accessible coach. The staff were very friendly and quickly got out the ramps for the accessible carriage as soon as they saw us. In Eskdale, staff came into the cafe and sought us out to ask which time train we were getting back so they could put the ramps out. The carriages require a little bending over from standing height to get into so just keep that in mind.

    A perfect day out

This narrow gauge stream Railway is a gem. The journey from Ravenglass to Dalegath is one of matchless beauty, from winding river estuary to a Station with a great view of Lakeland’s highest mountain, Scafell. All trains are wheelchair and mobility scooter assessable. The are two cafes at Dalegarth, we visited the lower one which is dog friendly. It can be accessed by a gentl tarmac slope from the station platform. My friend had a free ticket as my carer. Ideally it is better to give advance warning. We didn’t but the railway staff quickly removed a seat to create a generous space for my scooter and took charge of loading and unloading it, with great cheerfulness and good humour.
