Overview

Travelodge Edinburgh Central Waterloo Place is a mid price, accessible hotel in an excellent location, being only 3 - 5 minute level walk from Waverley Train Station. Waterloo Place is a continuation of Princess Street, so its right in the heart of the main shopping and tourist district.

I chose the hotel due to its proximity to Waverley Railway Station, which is a couple of minutes walk away. Exit the station by lift or stairs into Princess Street. From the Princess Street exit turn right, walking past the Balmoral Hotel, which is right next to the station. Then at the junction, don't continue along the same side of the road, but cross the road so you are on the opposite side of the street. So now you are on the same side of the road as the hotel. Then turn right and continue along the street, passing the National Records of Scotland building and immediately after that, cross Leith Street and continue along the road, which is now called Waterloo Place. The Travelodge is a few doors down. It's housed in a historic building and there are signs saying it is a Travelodge. The thing I really like about it is that when you are coming out of the station you are walking away from Princess Street, so you can avoid the crowds. As Waterloo Place is a continuation of Princess Street several buses pass by the hotel. There are bus stops in both directions very close by. St Andrew's Square is the nearest tram stop, and is about a 3 - 5 minute walk. The tram stop involves a walk slightly up hill. For a level walk from the hotel, I suggest walk through St James's Quarter shopping centre, which is on the corner of Leith Road. It's also undercover, so great if it's raining. Stay on the same level and exit at the opposite side and walk though Multrees Walk, a pedestrianised shopping street. This leads directly into St Andrew's Square and the tram stop is on your left.

Access

The front door was open and the inner door was automatic. The reception desk is at standing height immediately in front of you. There is a small foyer area with some vending machines. Then there is a manual door into the bedroom areas. There are two lifts. The floor sign next to the lift is in English and braille. My accessible room was 308 on lower ground floor 3. However due to the different street levels in Edinburgh the room was not in a basement. The room was along the corridor. The room had a double bed, desk, chair, a small wardrobe area and flat screen TV. On the head board was an emergency button and a sign in English and braille saying to use it in an emergency. The en suit bathroom had a wheels in shower. There was a flip down shower seat, plenty of grab rails and the emergency cord was between the shower and toilet. The room was clean, tidy and well maintained.

I don't know if there were any public toilets.

Staff

Staff were very helpful. When I arrived I was early and was able to leave my luggage with them. I collected my case and room key when I came back later. When I went in and out of the hotel staff would say hello. On check out I just left my key in the key drop.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I really enjoyed my stay and would definitely return. I loved the convenience of the location and I had a comfortable room at a reasonable price for central Edinburgh prices (in July it was about £130 p.n.). There was some outside noise but overall the hotel was quiet considering its location. The hotel does not have a restaurant. Breakfast boxes can be ordered for an additional charge. However, there are several cafes and restaurants very close by. If your looking for an accessible, comfortable hotel I'd strongly recommend staying here.
