V&A Dundee
I recently visited the V&A Dundee to see the Design and Disability exhibition, and I had a fantastic experience from start to finish. As a disabled visitor, accessibility makes a huge difference to whether I can enjoy a day out, and I was really impressed with how inclusive the museum was.
Before my visit, I booked a wheelchair through the museum's website. The online booking process was quick, simple, and easy to understand. I received confirmation before my visit, which gave me peace of mind knowing a wheelchair would be ready when I arrived. When I got to the museum, I just spoke to a member of staff at reception, and they brought the wheelchair over promptly. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and helpful, making the whole process feel effortless.
Getting around the museum was very straightforward. The building has step-free access throughout, with wide, spacious galleries that made it easy to move around in a wheelchair. There was plenty of room to stop and look at the displays without feeling crowded, even when other visitors were nearby.
The accessible toilets were clean, spacious, and easy to find. One detail I was especially pleased to see was that the red emergency pull cord was hanging all the way to the floor, exactly as it should be.
The Design and Disability exhibition itself was outstanding. It was fascinating to learn about the history of disability, disabled people's lives, and how design has evolved to improve accessibility and independence. There were so many interesting objects, stories, and innovations that highlighted the importance of designing with disabled people rather than simply for them.
I was particularly impressed by the range of accessibility features within the exhibition itself. There was an induction hearing loop available, making the exhibition more accessible for visitors with hearing impairments. Many displays included large-print text, which made them much easier to read. There were also QR codes that visitors could scan with their phones to access spoken descriptions and additional information, providing an excellent alternative to reading the display panels. These thoughtful features meant that more people could engage with the exhibition in a way that suited their needs.
Throughout my visit, every member of staff I spoke to was approachable, knowledgeable, and happy to help. I never felt like asking for assistance was an inconvenience, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
Overall, I had a brilliant day at V&A Dundee. The museum combines excellent physical accessibility with thoughtful inclusive design, and the Design and Disability exhibition perfectly reflects the importance of making spaces and experiences accessible to everyone. From the easy wheelchair hire and step-free access to the accessible toilets, inclusive exhibition design, and friendly staff, I left feeling genuinely welcomed and included.
