    About

York Theatre Royal has been producing great drama in the beautiful city of York for over 270 years and is one of the country’s leading producing theatres. Each year the theatre entertains over 200,000 people with its wide variety of performances, events and activities including the much loved annual pantomime starring Berwick Kaler, the UK’s longest-running Dame. Over the last ten years York Theatre Royal’s work has expanded to include collaborations with the wider community and school groups both on and off stage. The theatre has seen an increase in the number of young people wanting to get involved and as a result they now have one of the largest youth theatre groups in the country with over 300 members. In recent years, the theatre has had huge success in terms of number of attendees and various awards recognising their work for The Railway Children hosted at the National Railway Museum and then transferred to the old Eurostar terminal at Waterloo, and the large scale production of the York Mystery Plays 2012 involving over 1,000 members of the community.

Exceptional accessibility support and brilliant experience

We bought tickets the morning of the show when we saw Little Women was on. It was an amazing experience overall - fantastic accessibility support, clean and spacious accessible facilities, and a calm, welcoming environment. We were lucky with our visit, not only because I ended up with the most fantastic woman helping me book access tickets, but also because we found out after the show ended that there was a surprise Q&A with the cast and director. A few of us stayed behind, and they encouraged us to sit in the stalls for the Q&A - so I got the experience of viewing from both the Dress Circle and the Stalls. The view is still good from the wheelchair-accessible space in the stalls, but I personally preferred the Dress Circle view. (Pictures below.)

    Great theatre!

The theatre is level access, with electronic doors. Wheelchair users are seated a couple of rows from the stage at the end of the row near the door. This can mean you miss a little of the performance but not much. There is a lift up to the studio level so all performances should be wheelchair accessible.

    York Theatre Royal Review

York Theatre Royal is a theatre located in the heart of York city centre in St’ Leonards Place, in close proximity to the York Art Gallery and Museum Gardens. The exterior of the building is huge and upon entering the premises, there is a level entrance to the Foyer with automatic doors for easy wheelchair access, and at the Box Office area, there is a low counter, which is a great feature to allow effective communication with no barrier. Although not very noticeable, there are limited blue badge parking spaces located at the back of the theatre, but the distance from the car park to the building is appropriate. On the ground floor next to the café area, there is a big accessible toilet for wheelchair users and includes a red pull cord inside, for emergency purposes. On the right and left side of the toilets, there is a lift which can take people around different areas of the building including the Studio, Main House, Dress Circles and theatre bars.
