About

The Yorkshire Museum sits in the heart of York Museum Gardens in the centre of York. The museum was opened in 1830 by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and was one of the first purpose-built museums in the country. Reopened on 1 August 2010 following a nine-month £2 million refurbishment project, the Museum houses five galleries showcasing some of Britain’s finest archaeological treasures and many rare animals, birds and fossils in exciting displays. Our aim is to make the Yorkshire Museum a must-see destination in a tour around the beautiful city of York.

Spacious with good accessibilty to both gardens and museum

This is a great attraction which has plenty of space for wheelchair access and provides plenty of seating throughout . There are two entrances to the museum gardens with accessible paths that lead to the museum. The staff are helpful and will attempt to make special arrangements for disabled people.

Disabled Access at Yorkshire Museum

The museum is set within York Museum Gardens. The Gardens are fully wheelchair accessible with gently sloping pathways. There is a ramp to the left hand side of the museum's main entrance. The museum is on three floors and there is a lift situated by the main staircase. The lower ground and the ground floor are fully accessible to wheelchair users. The first floor is mainly accessible but the reading room and the historic library are only accessible via a short flight of 8 steps with a small landing half way up. There is a map of the museum available to download from our website.

Toilets features at Yorkshire Museum

Toilets are available on the lower ground floor. There is an accessible, gender neutral toilet on this floor as well as some baby changing facilities.

A designated accessible toilet designed for wheelchair users and others with visible and non-visible accessibility requirements is available within the main public areas.
