Lower level entrance to the Millennium Gallery Sheffield

In this month’s review roundup blog, we have an exciting selection of reviews for you to enjoy!

    Places to visit and explore

Euan’s Guide Review Coordinator Molly MrsMollyC recently visited the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield. Molly had a great time during her visit. In her review, Molly highlighted some of the accessibility features in the gallery, including some interactive exhibits, which you can read and listen to. Molly also mentioned moving around the gallery was easy and straightforward with lifts and escalators to get between the different levels of the gallery. Molly also mentioned that there is a helpful accessible information section on the galleries website for you to find out more about accessibility and whether it's right for you.

Finnberrys visited the Frietmuseum in Brugge, which tells the story of the humble potato and how Belgian fries are made. Finnberrys shared that the museum is mostly accessible and there is plenty of space to move around exhibits, though the journey to the museum was slightly trickier as the route was largely cobbled and the toilets were not as accessible as they might have been. Read more about the visit, and what to look out for at the Museum in the review.

Agalvin6298 had a great experience visiting their local cinema, the Odeon Port Solent. They shared in the review that they had an overall positive experience, especially with the accessibility of the cinema. The only challenge during the visit was heavy doorways, which the staff were happy to help with. The accessible toilets were also quite small, which may make it difficult for anyone needing the support of a companion or carer.

Fiskavaig shared a fantastic review of Inverness Castle. The castle has been well thought out in terms of accessibility to include anyone who has access requirements or anyone who is visiting with a family member who is disabled. There are audio guides which correspond with each room as you move around the castle, and you can listen to a commentary, which tells you more about the history and the exhibits in each room. Most parts of the castle are accessible via lift or platform lift, which the staff are always happy to help with. There are accessible toilets within the castle grounds, including a Changing Places toilet, and an accessible coffee shop and bistro, so that you can enjoy a bite to eat. It is always great to hear about a venue where accessibility has been built in and not added on as an afterthought. Thank you for your review, and we hope that you enjoy visiting again soon.

    Places to eat

DeminaiTrixx shared a fantastic review of The Botanist restaurant in Cardiff Bay. It is advisable to book in advance to let the staff know that you are coming and that you have access requirements. The restaurant covers two levels, and both levels can be accessed via a lift. DeminaTrixx mentioned in her review that travelling by public transport can be difficult as most transport links are some distance away from the restaurant. Walking and wheeling to the restaurant can also be difficult due to uneven pavements and cobbled areas of the streets. There are some carparks available in the local area which have accessible parking spaces. The staff in the restaurant are always very helpful and welcoming to any customers. Thank you for your review and sharing your experience with our community - your review will help someone else plan a visit with confidence!

Marklondon shared a very positive review of the Fenchurch Pub in central London. He visited recently and had a very enjoyable experience with easy access to the pub itself, and the staff were very welcoming and attentive and happy to help.

WheelyP shared his visit to The Lost Kitchen Restaurant in Chettiscombe in Devon. There are some features of this restaurant that would make it inaccessible, but the owner has worked hard to make it as accessible as possible. The restaurant is positioned on the hill, but there is parking available at the top of the hill, which is a short distance to the entrance of the restaurant. There is also a gravel covered car park, which can make access to the restaurant difficult, but staff are happy to help any customers who need it. There are some photographs included in the review which really help to give an idea of the layout of the restaurant and its surrounding areas. Once you're inside the restaurant, it sounds as though the food and the atmosphere make it worth the effort! Thank you WheelyP for your review, and for encouraging other people to visit this restaurant.

    Accessible accommodation

SeaJohnson reviewed Hotel Gotham in Newcastle. The review focuses on the accessibility of the hotel. There are accessible rooms available on request. The main door of the hotel has a rotating door, but there is an accessible function to make it wheelchair accessible. Thank you very much for sharing your review and sharing accessible places to stay.

Review of the month comes from DeminaaiTrixx who reviewed The Botanist restaurant in Cardiff Bay. The review gives a brilliant summary of the accessibility of the restaurant, and the helpful staff that help to make the experience more welcoming and pleasant. We love all the reviews that people share with us, and the ones that have as much detail and information are amazing because the more access information that is provided means more confidence will be gained by someone who wants to visit somewhere new. Thank you again for sharing your review and we look forward to finding out where you review next!

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to share their experience of accessibility this month by submitting a review to our small but mighty charity!
