Impossible to park and use as a wheelchair user

    2

    Date of visit: October 2026

I am a disabled person. I have experience of challenges around: accessing toilets and moving around.

I use or have experience of: disabled toilet, wheelchair

The row of charging bays in the car park. On the right of the bays is signage and payment machines for the car parkA closer view of the spaces. They seem to have had multiple different paint markings so the bays are difficult to make out. There are hatched lines across the row and these are combined with the lines marking out each bay but they are all equally faded so it makes the bays look very confusing. There is a machine in between two bays and it is based against the wall at the top of the baysThe charging machine itself which is a tall, black, circular machine. It has a slanted top where the payment point is and connectors on either side. There is a metal barrier encircling the whole machine and then at the base of the machine there is a concrete, square base that creates a kerb a couple of feet away from the machine itself

These EV charging bays were located inside a small public car park in the city centre. It seems that the area was previously entirely hatched off and it makes the markings depicting each bay quite difficult to distinguish. There were four charging bays in total and one machine between two bays. The bays were standard size bays meaning there was very little space around or in between the bays. I would not personally be able to use these bays because I require the space to get my wheelchair out on one side of the car and this would be impossible with cars parked next to me. With cars parked next to each other, it also would make it almost impossible to get a wheelchair between two cars to reach the charging machine. The machine itself has been laid out in a way that makes it very difficult to use from a wheelchair. The machine has been placed on a square, concrete base which is higher than the floor. This means that I would be unable to get close enough to the machine in my wheelchair to reach the connectors or the interaction point at the top of the machine.

    Disabled Access In and Around

    Poor

The accessibility of these spaces was quite poor. The spaces themselves were standard size and so anyone that requires additional space around their vehicle to park or move around it wouldn’t be able to use these spaces. The machines themselves had been placed in a way that made it impossible for me to use them as a wheelchair user. They were placed on a square concrete base which was higher than the floor meaning there was a kerb around the base which stopped me from being able to roll close to the machine itself. The width of the base actually meant that I wasn’t able to reach the connectors or the interaction point at the top of the machine from my wheelchair as I was forced to stop further away than my arms could reach.
