Callendar House

For an older building it has been adapted well for people living with disabilities. I’ve visited in my foldable power chair and my more robust one. Plenty of parking, blue badge spaces at the side of the house or you can park in front of the house Water bowl for dogs and a Scottish water station in front of the house, wheelchair access is separate from the main entrance just slightly to the left of the main entrance and you mere,y press a buzzer and the door is opened promptly. Straight in and there’s a lift to your right menthol, not huge but big enough for one wheelchair and probably two passengers. The interior is mainly exhibits about Falkirk and art displays, some of the exhibits are a little tight to get round but not too dificult There is an accessible cafe with lovely scones but it does close about four. The lift recently broke and Falkirk council had it repaired promptly The only area I could not access in my chair was the gift shop although staff were more than happy to show me merchandise and were knowledgable about the house, its history and local knowlege Even my folding chair could manage the paths outside the house but not a bit further where there are Beautifull woods with natural sculptures throughout Brilliant play area is just near the house and lots of squirrels It’s a place I’ve enjoyed for many years and can still enjoy now in a chair I haven’t used the disabled toilets so can’t comment on them And did I mention the scones? Lovely

Calendar house is owned by Falkirk council and is set in calendar park. The park has play areas and walks but due to the weather we were unable to make use of these. We spent the afternoon inside the house looking at various items on display . Many of the items tell you about the Falkirk area. Dating form Roman times onwards. In one of the rooms you can see where the Antonine wall is. Plenty of information about the various exhibits in the rooms. There is also a Victorian kitchen. Staff on hand to explain about the items in the kitchen .Access to the house is good disabled visitors enter by a side door which is opened by the reception staff there is a lift to all floors . Getting round some of the exhibits can be a bit tight in places but I managed ok in my wheelchair, it just took a few goes to turn round.. there is a nice cafe with views out over the grounds . The cafe has a good choice of snacks and sandwiches, we had a most enjoyable afternoon visit with family .

Fascinating place to explore and a top spot for afternoon tea in Falkirk. Lots of engaging exhibits including costume dress ups and tactile activities. Then there's the whole park to explore! The staff are lovely.
