Getting the DLR at Devon's Park

This DLR stop has a very similar layout to some others that are nearby. It’s based above ground so it is open to the weather; however, both platforms have canopies providing some overhead cover. While the station is above ground, the platforms are a level below street level. There are stairs and lifts providing access from street level to the platforms. There are two platforms at this station. On platform 1 you’ll find services to Stratford and on platform 2 there are services to Canary Wharf. There is a small lift based at the very end of both platforms. The DLR trains stop level with the platform with only a very small gap between the train and the platform. This means you can board and disembark step-free without the need for a boarding ramp. This is an unmanned station.

Disabled Access In and Around

Good

At street level there are steps and a ramp that lead into an area that has a ticket machine and signs to the platforms. There is also a small shop here. The stairs and ramp both have grab rails on either side. On either side of this area, there is a lift, a set of stairs leading down to the platform, and a sign detailing the direction of the trains on that platform. This is the same on both sides and the signs also show which stops are along each route on each platform. The lifts are really small and have a grab rail and tactile buttons inside them. At platform level, the lift opens onto the platform and there are no barriers between the lift and the edge of the platform. Because of this, there is a sign at street level that recommends that those using wheelchairs and mobility scooters reverse into the lift at street level so that it is safer to exit the lift at platform level. The platforms have seating available and the seats have backs and armrests. There are overhead digital signs which provide information about incoming trains. The edge of the platform is marked with tactile markings and a painted yellow line. There is an emergency alarm on each platform; this point has an emergency train stop button and a passenger alarm button and intercom. The panels for these buttons are red on an otherwise white display and there are red and white stripes down the side of the panel, so they are easy to spot, even from further down the platform. The DLR trains stop level with the platform, so there is a minimal gap between the train and the platform. Those needing step-free access are able to board and disembark the trains without the need for a boarding ramp. Some of the doors of the train have blue stickers on them which highlight the best place to board if you have a wheelchair or pram. These doors are located close to a wheelchair space on the train which also has a lowered passenger alarm. On the older DLR trains, these spaces are quite awkward and I find them difficult to get in and out of, so I don’t use them. On the newer trains, they have been designed much better and have more space to get in and out of them. The newer DLR trains also have lower buttons to open the doors. Each set of doors on the DLR has buttons on the inside and outside which you have to press to open them. These buttons are tactile and also have Braille above them.

From this station you can get DLR services to Stratford and Canary Wharf. For access to other branches of the DLR, you can change at Canary Wharf. Around 100 metres away from the station, on Campbell Road, there are two bus stops, one on either side of the road. They are called Devons Road Station (Stop BV) and Devons Road Station (Stop BR). From these stops you can get the bus 108. In the other direction, 140 metres away on Devons Road, there are two more bus stops opposite each other. They are called Devons Road Station (Stop BJ) and Devons Road Station (Stop BM). From these stops you can get the bus 323.
