Stanley Mills was founded to process cotton at the height of the Industrial Revolution. There are superb interactive displays and games that help you to experience working life here. Listen to the Gaelic poetry and stories of the displaced Highlanders who worked in the mills. 1 Apr to 30 Sept: Daily except Sun & Tue, 10am to last entry at 4pm (closes 4.30pm). Additional opening: The mill will be open on Sun 20 April (Easter Sunday) and Sun 11 May (National Mills Weekend). The mill will be free on Sat 10 & Sun 11 May as part of National Mills Weekend. 1 Oct to 31 Mar: Closed

Very Good Accessibility, Great Staff

The mills are the original 200 year old buildings and have been made as accessible as possible. There are interactive displays and staff on hand to give further information and help whenever needed. The whole site is on a hill but the interior of the buldings are flat and/or ramped. We were given a map showing the best accessible route when inside the buildings including where the lifts and toilets were.

Disabled Access at Stanley Mills

Approach to site Approach to site is across the road, down a ramp or a short flight of stairs to the entrance. Visitor centre The shop and visitor centre are reached from the Bell Mill. This is all on the level. Monument Stanley Mills comprises five rooms which can all reached by lifts. The first room, known as ‘200 years of cotton’, is on the ground floor of the Bell Mill. The floor has uneven areas. There is seating. The tar room is in the basement of the Bell Mill and consists of a short narrow corridor. It is reached by either a spiral staircase or lift. The archaeology room is also in the basement. The floor is a metal grid. The wheel pit walkway is reached through a doorway with no steps and has a metal grid floor. The interactive room is located in the ground floor of the Mid Mill and is reached through a doorway from the wheelpit walkway with a slight bump up. The floor here is concrete and relatively even. There is seating. The carding room is located on the first floor of the Mid Mill and is reached by two flights of stairs or the lift. This room has an even concrete floor and there is seating. The spinning room is located on the first floor of the Bell Mill. Access is up two flights of spiral stairs or the lift from the ground floor of the Bell Mill. The floor has uneven surfaces due to the nature of the historic floor. There is seating. The artefact store, only opened to the public on request or on open days, is on the second floor of the Bell Mill and reached by the spiral staircase or the lift from the spinning room. The terrace is at the side of the Bell Mill and is reached by a steep slope from the front of the visitor centre Ear Defenders A limited number of adult and children's ear defenders are available at this site. Please ask a member of staff if you want to borrow them.

There is a level, tarmac surfaced car park in front of the visitor centre. Accessible spaces are signed.
