Unpleasant experience as a wheelchair user

Stratford Bus Station is located just outside one of the main entrances to Stratford Railway Station. It’s made up of different bus stops and bus stands. I find that when the station is busy it is a really unpleasant experience trying to board a bus as a wheelchair user. The crowds that get created around some of the bus stops can be really large. This makes it hard to catch the driver’s attention to ask for the ramp to be deployed but also the rush to board the bus once it arrives becomes very unsettling as people don’t pay enough attention to their surroundings. I use this bus station quite regularly and I have often seen British Transport Police patrolling the area, especially at busy times which is reassuring. I’ve even had instances where officers have come and helped me in the process of getting onto a bus which I’ve appreciated, especially at those super busy times.

The entire bus station is the same level with no steps or inclines. There is an information point which has a lowered counter but I have rarely seen it opened or manned. Each bus stop is marked with overhead signage that shows which buses will stop there. Some of the stops have a small amount of seating available. There is a large canopy that covers one section of the station. This part is where you would wait for a bus to arrive and continue your journey, the uncovered area is mainly where terminating buses stop. The bus stops can become incredibly busy and this can often make it very difficult to let a bus driver know that I need the ramp deployed on the bus. I have often found that the rush to get on a bus can even feel dangerous and people don’t have enough awareness of what’s around them. There are no alternative formats in use.

This bus station has a large number of buses arriving here and some even terminate here. Across the whole station these are the bus services that use this bus station: 25, 69, 86, 104, 158, 238, 241, 257, 262, 276, 308, 425, 473, D8, DL-7, N8, N25, and N86. Right next to the bus station is Stratford train station. From this station you can get services on the Central, DLR, Elizabeth, Jubilee, and Mildmay lines. You can also get Greater Anglia trains from this station. There is a multi-storey car park just over the road from the bus station called Stratford multi-storey car park. It is a paid car park that is open 24/7. According to the website, it has a total of 430 parking spaces with 25 accessible parking spaces. It has a height restriction of 6 feet 2 inches (about 1.87 metres). There are also three very large car parks which are part of Westfield Stratford which is just a short walk from the station. These are also all paid car parks and have a height restriction of 2.1 metres. They all offer accessible parking spaces and some have EV charging bays too. Car Parks A & B are open 24/7, Car Park C can be exited 24/7 but can only be entered at the following times: Monday-Saturday, 5am-10pm and Sunday 7am-10pm. These car parks can sometimes have restricted access if they become full, this can happen when there are events happening at the London Stadium or in the Olympic Park.
