Mixed experience great staff, but accessibility and facilities need improvement
First, the staff were absolutely lovely and very helpful throughout our stay, and it’s set in a nice local area – I even woke up to the sound of birds singing, which was lovely.
Accessibility was a bit of a mixed bag. There was a ramp up to the room, but there was a small step to actually get inside. My dad had to help me stand, walk me in, and then bring my wheelchair in afterwards. Once inside, everything was on one level, with two single beds – though the mattresses were very soft, and I found it took me a long time to get to sleep. There was only one chair provided in the room too. The bathroom was really difficult to use; I couldn’t turn my wheelchair around by the toilet, so my dad had to help me walk out each time. I actually had a fall in there, and I realised there was no emergency pull cord to call for help when I needed it. Also, both taps in the room only ran cold water, and there were no USB ports anywhere to charge devices. We also had an issue with the room door – it wouldn’t lock properly, even though reception said it did. After about 10 minutes, a member of staff came and sorted it out for us.
The food had its ups and downs too. In the evening, we paid £54 for a cheesesteak, fish and chips, plus a beer and a Diet Coke. My chips were only warm – my dad offered to send them to be reheated, but I didn’t bother as I wouldn’t have eaten many anyway. I tried his chips instead, and they were much nicer. I didn’t enjoy my meal much at all, so I ended up having a quarter of my dad’s fish and his peas, which were delicious. Breakfast was okay, but quite a lot of the items were cold by the time we had them.
On a positive note, the restaurant had a large, fully accessible disabled toilet which worked very well for us, and the location felt nice and peaceful.
Overall, the team here really tried their best, and the setting is great, but there are quite a few things – especially around accessibility, facilities and food quality – that need attention to make it a comfortable stay for guests with additional needs.
