The Devil's Porridge Museum

If you are even vaguely interested in history, war, porridge... then don't miss this venue. We were there for hours but still need to go back for another visit. It's all indoors, so smooth surfaces. Staff were proactively helpful. On the ground floor are lots of exhibits, a cafe, and toilets. There's a lift to get to the first floor, where there are more exhibits. There is a portable audio guide but it was just as easy to listen to the audio exhibits and read the large print boards. The accessible toilet was well equipped and spacious. It felt as though a lot of thought had been put into making everything accessible.

During WW1 , HM Factory Gretna was the largest munitions factory in the world. The museum presents an insight into life for the workers, who were mainly young women. The purpose built museum is usually fully accessible, the day I visited the lift wasn’t working, and I couldn’t access the upper floor, but I was given a years free pass to visit as many times as I wanted as compensation. Great customer service. I loved my visit, everything was well presented and set out. Interactive activities for older children.There is a lot of reading though.There is a fabulous café on site which serves delicious and reasonably priced food and home baking, which I would also highly recommend, the only reason I haven’t given 5 stars is because the pathway accessing the café had tables both sides, and this made it difficult to access with my wheelchair.

I'd been wanting to visit The Devil's Porridge Museum for quite some time and the visit there did not disappoint. I would recommend it to anyone visiting the area. The building is modern and has good disabled access. The history of the area told in the museum is very interesting and it has a great mix of artefacts, information panels, film and audio to help bring the history to life.
