Lovely, chilled weekend away in the countryside at a self-catering wheelchair accessible accommodation on a 90-acre farmland run by Moria and her family.

When we arrived at The Rings, the main door was unlocked, so we just had to let ourselves in. The door has to be opened manually. The hallway is a little narrow within The Rings. I have a smallish, powered wheelchair, and we had my dog’s crate in the hallway, but I still managed to get past it. The accessible bedroom that I slept in was the first bedroom from the front door. In this room there was a profiling bed, a ceiling tracking hoist and another standard bed. Now I really enjoyed my stay at The Rings, but I did really struggle with the ceiling tracking hoist. It is at a diagonal angle on the ceiling, and I had to get my bed moved every time to be able to hoist from my bed to whatever chair I was using. We hired another two rooms at The Rings, and the people I visited with enjoyed their room. One of the rooms was able to be put into a king-sized bed, and the other one was able to be made into twin beds. My bedroom was the only one that had a ceiling tracking hoist, but every bedroom was adaptable for wheelchair users. A nice feature they all had was that you were able to pull down the wardrobe bar with a handle. My heating was a little confusing, but Moria, the owner, was very quick at bringing me a heater. Every bedroom and the kitchen have patio doors leading out into the garden, which means that people can just hire out one of the rooms and enter through the patio doors to the room instead of the main building. The kitchen, dining and living room area was very spacious. You got beautiful views through the large window behind the sofa over the farm fields. The sink area can be adjusted in the kitchen, but some of the cupboards were quite high for a wheelchair user to reach. For the dining room table, I had to sit at the edge corner on the extended bit because I couldn’t get my knees under the table; this was fine, though, because there were only a few of us staying. The TV in the living room didn’t work very well for us, but we managed to entertain ourselves, and the Wi-Fi was working perfectly on our phones and tablets. There is also a laundry room outside of the building that we were staying in. I didn’t go into this area, but I have included a photo of it within this review. The Rings has many rooms within it, and the building can be made up in around 12 ways for different visitors. We only had 3 of the bedrooms and one of the kitchen, dining room, and living room areas. Moria showed us around some of the other areas though. There are 2 main living room areas, divided by a collapsible wall. Some of the bedrooms have ceiling tracking hoists; some don’t. Some are just bedrooms; some are more apartment-styled bedrooms with a kitchen, seats and a little table, as well as beds. All bedrooms have en-suites though, and all bedrooms are wheelchair accessible. When booking Moria will ask what your access requirements are and then will match you with the most appropriate room. The garden is located at the back of The Rings; it isn’t fenced off though, so my dog had to be kept on her lead any time she was outside. She was allowed anywhere outside, though. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really go outside with her though because the grass was uneven and the rest of the ground was gravelly. There was a wooden board patio area that I explored on the first day, but it was a bit chilly to sit outside for too long. On our second day, Moria showed us around the barn area of The Rings. It is not possible to walk to the barn area of The Rings from where we were staying. We had to drive back up the driveway, go back onto the country road and go down a very bumpy farm road. Within the barn, there are The Rings offices, a Changing Places toilet, a little café area, a big play barn, a sensory room and a hot tub room. There is a full ceiling-tracking hoist in the hot tub room to make it accessible for people to use. Accessibility has definitely been thought of at The Rings.

Unfortunately, I don’t think you can take any public transport to The Rings because it is in the countryside. We drove for our visit, and it was good that we were able to park our car right next to the entrance to our area of The Rings, so we were able to unpack easily. We parked my car up the steep driveway on the Saturday as more guests came to other areas of The Rings. The driveway down to The Rings is a bit gravelly, but they are hoping to smooth out the stones in the future. The only thing I would say is that the signage to enter The Rings area where we stayed because it was difficult to see from the country road.

Every bedroom in The Rings has an en-suite wet-room shower and is wheelchair accessible. My en-suite also had a bath. There was a tracking hoist above the bath seat, but I don’t know how easy it would be to hoist down onto it. I was able to easily hire a commode shower chair. Moria explained to us that they have suction removable grab rails because they feel everyone has different access requirements, so they’d rather move things to where individual guests need them. The toilet roll holder is also movable. It was interesting to know that each toilet has black tiles behind it; this is to help people with dementia or someone who is visually impaired. The only thing I would say is that, for wheelchair users, it is quite difficult to get into the sink, and the mirror was quite high to see into.

We met Moria the first night we arrived, and she was very welcoming. She showed us around the other areas of The Rings that we hadn’t booked out. Moria was very helpful as well, and nothing was a bother for her to help us with.
